Sugarcane Co-ops appeal for tax waiver

By Benedicto Tirop.

Sugarcane Savings and Co-operatives Societies (Saccos) leaders have urged Kericho County Government to waive cess levied on their earnings to enable the sector compete effectively in availing financial aid to Kenyans.
Led by the Chairman, Joash Korir, members of Chepkoinik Cooperative Society said the County should scrap the collection of Sh15,000 per week which was equivalent to one per cent per tone of sugarcane.
“The cess collection should be waived because despite the collection, the roads in the sugarcane area are in pathetic condition”, he observed.
Speaking during the 2017 Ushirika Day celebrations held at Kericho Primary School, the members said the county collected over Sh720,000 cess per year from Chepkoinik alone, yet the farmers had not seen any road development in the area.
