Kajiado County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender, Culture, Cooperatives, Tourism and Wildlife Janet Sereu has commended Muungano Women Group Housing Cooperative for acquiring a new building in Ongata Rongai.
Speaking during the meeting in Rongai, Sereu said that the group is among the best managed in the county and has been empowering women besides cultivating a saving culture.
The CECM said that her office has planned for training sessions across the year for such groups to empower cooperative members on how to invest and save.
“We are able to support you efficiently when you are in groups, we had 500 cooperatives on October and now we have over 700, we have done a lot of mobilization and trainings so far,” she said.
The group’s Director and former Councilor, Ruth Wakapa, said that they raised Ksh10 million from members and acquired a loan to purchase the commercial four-storey building which cost Ksh40 million.
Director Wakapa, 72, said that the group will hold a fundraiser to raise money to kick off the loan repayment.
Agnes Njoroge, who joined the group in 1992, said that she has been a major beneficiary of the group which has enabled her to create wealth for her children.
Ongata Rongai MCA, Titus Matheka, said that the County Assembly passed an Act that will obligate the county government to allocate funds towards women groups to facilitate growth and development of women.
Muungano started as a group in 1990, consisting of 41 women’s groups from Kajiado North. They were given land by the late Interior Minister Prof. George Saitoti in Rongai in 1992. They then raised money through personal contributions, loans and fundraisings to construct the Muungano Building, which became their head office.
