500 Boda-boda operators have so far been registered in the ongoing countrywide registration as was directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The campaigned is aimed at sanitizing the sector after rogue operators brought mayhem to the roads.
The Presidents directive came shortly after an alleged barbaric attack on a female motorist by Boda-boda operators along Wangari Maathai road in Nairobi which led to arrest of over 16 riders.
Speaking while touring the Migori Huduma Centre to oversee the operation, Migori County Commissioner Meru Mwangi said that so far they have registered 500 Boda-boda operators even as they target 15,000 operators after the operation kicked off on Monday.
He noted that their daily target is 250 Boda-boda operators so as to achieve the set target by the end of the exercise.
He urged all the Boda-bodas and other riders to use the time allocated and register for their own benefit. Meru noted that the exercise may likely take 60 days but called upon the riders not to wait until the dateline to do so.
“The government had waived the Sh5,800 fee payment and it is important for Boda-boda operators to utilize the waived period to register themselves afresh,” noted Mwangi.
He said the purpose of the fresh registration was to establish the number of Boda-boda operators in the country in order to establish better rules and regulations of operations in the business.
Mwangi pointed out that so far the process was running smoothly and called upon the cooperation of all the Boda-boda operators during the registration period to help the government serve them well.
“All we need from the Boda-boda operators is their original Identification Card (ID) and KRA Pin,” added Meru as he also noted that those with NHIF will have an added advantage.
The Commissioner urged the Boda-bodas to observe road safety to minimize accidents that keep on claiming the lives of innocent Kenyans.
