Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Thursday presided over Mazingira Day commemoration at the Nairobi Arboretum.
The CS called on Kenyans to come together in efforts to protect and restore the environment.
Duale said Mazingira Day provides a vital opportunity to accelerate environmental protection and raise awareness of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution
The holiday aligns with the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme, which aims to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by 2032. The plan involves planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
“To celebrate the day, Kenyans should participate in environmental conservation initiatives,” he said.
The CS noted that to achieve this it requires full participation of both government and society.
He called on Kenyans to take part in initiatives that include; Clean-up activities: Citizens are urged to clear waste from homes, roads, beaches, and parks.

The public is encouraged to organize forums as well as participate in discussions on sustainability, focusing on the circular economy’s principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.
Mazingira Day, observed on October 10th annually, replaces Moi Day, which was renamed Huduma Day and later Utamaduni Day before being rebranded as Mazingira Day in 2023.
The holiday, previously held in honor of former President Daniel Moi, was removed from the list of national holidays in 2010 after the adoption of the new Constitution.
It was however reinstated in 2017 by High Court and it was later renamed Huduma Day in 2019 and then Utamaduni Day in 2020 to celebrate Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage.
