Uwezo Fund Boosts Nyeri Town Constituency with Ksh 3.15 Million

In a significant step toward empowering local communities, Uwezo Fund cheques totaling Ksh 3,150,000 were presented to 19 groups in Nyeri Town Constituency. The event was presided over by Hon. Rahab Mukami, Nyeri County Women Representative, alongside Hon. Duncan Mathenge, MP for Nyeri Town, Uwezo Fund Chairperson Ms. Ann Njuguna, and Senior Assistant County Commissioner Mr. Nyaga.

The ceremony, held as part of an initiative to promote economic empowerment and self-reliance, saw 9 groups benefit as repeat applicants, while 10 others accessed the funds for the first time.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Mukami lauded the beneficiaries for their commitment to self-development and urged them to make the most of the funds to improve their livelihoods.

“The Uwezo Fund is a key tool in fostering grassroots development, and I encourage more groups to apply. Through collaboration and effective use of these resources, we can achieve self-reliance and build stronger communities,” she stated.

Hon. Mathenge echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and accountability in utilizing the funds. “This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to supporting small businesses and community groups. Let us work together to ensure these funds create meaningful and sustainable impact,” he said.

In line with the All-of-Government approach, representatives from various agencies, including the Huduma Centre, National Employment Authority (NEA), Youth Fund, National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), and the State Housing Authority (SHA), made presentations during the event.

These agencies highlighted their respective programs and resources available to the public, reinforcing the collaborative effort to empower local communities.

Ms. Ann Njuguna, the Uwezo Fund Chairperson, expressed her satisfaction with the increasing number of applicants and encouraged more groups to take advantage of the program. “The Uwezo Fund is designed to provide affordable credit to groups, enabling them to venture into income-generating activities. By doing so, we foster financial independence and entrepreneurship at the grassroots level,” she explained.

Senior ACC Mr. Nyaga emphasized the importance of accountability in managing public resources, urging beneficiaries to remain committed to the objectives of the fund.

The Uwezo Fund, established in 2013, is a flagship program aimed at enabling women, youth, and persons with disabilities to access interest-free loans. The initiative also provides mentorship and capacity-building opportunities, equipping beneficiaries with the skills needed to manage and grow their enterprises.

Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, with one group leader stating, “This support will help us expand our business and create job opportunities for our community. We are truly grateful for this initiative.”

The event underscored the government’s commitment to fostering grassroots development and creating a conducive environment for economic growth. As the beneficiaries embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, they serve as a testament to the transformative potential of community-driven initiatives like the Uwezo Fund.
