Smallholder tea factories earned Ksh 906,842,793.90 last week after auctioning 2,537,830 kg of made tea through the Mombasa Tea Auction.
Githongo Tea Factory in Meru took the lead, attaining a price of Ksh 670.8 ($5.2) per kg for its BP1 grade, driven by production of quality green leaf. The result sparked celebration across the Kenyan tea industry.
Other factories that fetched premium prices included Mununga, Kiegoi, Kimunye, Imenti and Rukuriri, earning between Ksh 420.54 and Ksh 442.47 per kg.
The auction report also shows Kangaita, Gathuthi, Ngere and Gacharage among the top performers, fetching between Ksh 415.38 and Ksh 419.25 per kg of made tea.
In the West of the Rift, Momul Factory led the pack, offering 48,540 kg that traded at Ksh 347 per kg.

KTDA Chairman Enos Njeru said the tea industry has remained competitive, with farmers dedicated to producing quality teas that attract local and international markets. He added that Githongo’s achievement should encourage continued production of quality tea by Kenya’s growers.
“The offers at the auction were fewer, owing to many farmers having pruned their green bushes ahead of fertiliser application before the rains,” Njeru said.
According to the Tea Board of Kenya, the country sold 6.1 million kg at the auction. The East of the Rift fetched an average price of Ksh 408.93 ($3.17) per kg, compared to Ksh 312.18 ($2.42) per kg in the West of the Rift.
