A Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officer in Kisumu has been arrested after allegedly demanding Ksh100,000 to clear Ksh4.5 million in tax arrears from the iTax system and facilitate issuance of a Tax Compliance Certificate.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) identified the suspect as Hughes Obilo, an officer attached to KRA’s Debt Refunds Department in Kisumu.

According to EACC, the officer allegedly demanded the money from a construction company in exchange for irregularly clearing the outstanding tax liability. Investigators subsequently mounted an operation that led to his arrest on September 14, 2026, as he allegedly received Ksh30,000.

Police booked Obilo at Kisumu Central Police Station for processing and statement recording as investigations continue.

The case forms part of EACC’s ongoing operations targeting alleged bribery at public service delivery points.
