- Nairobi’s 2029 athletics event is expected to create new business opportunities

Kenya is set to benefit from increased business and employment opportunities after Nairobi was selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Wycliffe Oparanya has said.
Oparanya said hosting the global athletics event would strengthen Kenya’s position on the international sporting stage while creating opportunities for businesses across the country.
In an update shared on his Facebook page, the CS said Kenya had continued to make history through major international sporting events, citing the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to Oparanya, the decision to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi marks another major achievement, with the city set to become the first in Africa to host the prestigious global event.

Oparanya commended everyone involved in securing the hosting rights. Beyond the sporting achievement, he said the event would create opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through tourism, hospitality, trade, job creation and enterprise growth. He urged stakeholders to prepare Kenyan entrepreneurs so they can benefit from the business opportunities expected to come with the championships.
“We must position our entrepreneurs to fully benefit from the opportunities this global event will bring,” Oparanya said.
The championships are expected to attract athletes, officials, visitors and sports fans from around the world. Oparanya said this presents an opportunity for Kenyan businesses to grow their customer base, create jobs and expand their enterprises. However, proper preparation will be important to ensure MSMEs are ready to meet the increased demand expected during the event.
