Eight employees from tea factories and plantations in Bureti Constituency have been detained over suspected irregularities in the weighing of green leaves supplied by small-scale farmers.
The suspects include three employees from Kapkatet Tea Factory, while others are affiliated with Litein and Chelal tea factories and Browns Plantations.
The arrests followed a joint inspection by the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK) and the Department of Weights and Measures. The agencies conducted surprise visits to several tea buying centres, locally known as bandas, to assess the accuracy and integrity of weighing operations.

During the inspections, officials examined weighing machines used by tea collection agents to determine the quantity of green leaves delivered by farmers before the produce is transported to processing factories.
The exercise is part of efforts to ensure that farmers receive accurate payments based on the actual quantities of tea leaves they deliver.
The detained employees are expected to assist authorities with investigations into the alleged irregularities.
