- Farmers in Tana River are set to receive new equipment to support production
- The package combines irrigation tools with technology to protect harvested grain
- Support targets vetted farmer groups and cooperatives across four wards
Tana River farmers will receive grain storage equipment and irrigation pumps under a county programme meant to cut harvest losses and lift output.
Officials in the county’s Department of Agriculture have bought 6,000 hermetic bags, 250 grain silos and 250 tarpaulins. Moisture meters are also part of the package. For irrigation, the department has added 60 solar-powered pumps and two piston-lister diesel pumps.
Farmer groups and cooperatives that have passed vetting will receive the equipment. Beneficiaries are spread across four wards, so the support is expected to reach several farming communities rather than a single area.

Together, the items cover both ends of the farming cycle. Pumps help growers water their crops, while bags, silos and tarpaulins protect grain once it is harvested. Moisture meters let farmers check how dry their produce is before storing it, which matters for food safety.
Money for the purchases came from the Tana River County Ward Development Fund. This is a mechanism that lets the county channel resources into projects and services at ward level. It is also meant to ensure that spending reflects priorities set by residents.
The distribution was flagged off at the Galole Sub-County Office. Chief Officer for Agriculture and Cooperative Development Faith Buya presided over the event.
She said partnerships and backing from the County Assembly were central to improving food security and expanding irrigation. In her view, the support would help the county make steady progress on both fronts.
