- Suppliers and contractors are set to receive payments after Cabinet clears verified government debts.
- Small businesses owned by women, young people and persons with disabilities will receive priority.
- Claims dating back to 2005 feature in a long-running effort to settle outstanding government bills.
Thousands of suppliers and contractors owed by the Government can expect payment after Cabinet approved the settlement of verified pending bills.
Ministers cleared all verified bills of Ksh50 million and below on Friday. In total, 28,726 bills will be paid, amounting to Ksh23.74 billion. That figure is 98 per cent of the 29,257 bills recommended for settlement, and some of the claims date back to 2005.
Behind the decision lies a long verification exercise. The Pending Bills Verification Committee received 115,617 claims worth Ksh664.8 billion. After scrutiny, 29,257 claims valued at Ksh155.34 billion were recommended for payment.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
The National Treasury will oversee the process. According to the Government, the payments will ease cash-flow pressure on affected businesses, protect jobs and rebuild confidence among those who supply goods and services to the State.
Within the payment queue, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will get priority, particularly those owned by women, young people and persons with disabilities.
Larger claims have not been left out. Verified bills above Ksh50 million will be settled progressively. Earlier, the Government also cleared roads sector claims worth more than Ksh80 billion, as part of wider efforts to tackle long overdue payments.
