  • Modern markets are set to incorporate digital facilities targeting young people seeking online work.
  • The planned centres will provide access to computers, internet connectivity and digital skills training.
  • The initiative aims to expand access to technology and promote economic opportunities for youth.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced plans to equip modern markets with computer facilities, free internet and digital skills training to help young people access online employment opportunities.

Kindiki said youth centres within the markets would be fitted with between 40 and 50 computers, with instructors available to train young people on how to use the technology to earn a living.

He made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing traders and residents at Marima in Tharaka Nithi County, urging young people to take advantage of the facilities to develop digital skills and explore opportunities in the online economy.

The Deputy President said the initiative was intended to make digital resources accessible to young people who cannot afford computers, internet subscriptions or formal training.

He cited website design and foreign exchange trading among the activities young people could explore online, encouraging them to use the internet to seek productive opportunities.

Kindiki, however, cautioned the youth against using digital platforms to abuse political leaders, calling on them to concentrate on activities that could improve their livelihoods.

He said young people should exercise their democratic rights peacefully and avoid being drawn into political confrontations, including violence at public meetings.

The Deputy President also urged the youth to resist being exploited by politicians to disrupt rallies or attack opponents, saying access to digital facilities should help them become economically independent.

He said the proposed information and communication technology (ICT) hubs would provide an alternative for young people who spend time idle on the streets because of limited employment opportunities.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to expand access to digital technology and integrate ICT facilities into modern markets, creating spaces where traders and young people can access services beyond conventional business activities.

The proposed centres are expected to provide both equipment and basic computer instruction, potentially lowering the barriers faced by young people seeking to participate in the digital economy.

Kindiki called on the youth to make responsible use of the facilities and pursue opportunities that could enable them to earn an income through online work.
