Makupa Transit Shed Limited gets fresh customs approval

Makupa Transit Shed Limited has been re-appointed by the Commissioner of Customs and Border Control, Dr Lilian Nyawanda, with its operating boundaries formally redefined. The notice, published in the Kenya Gazette, revokes and replaces Gazette Notice No. 17667 of 2023.

Going forward, the facility’s limits, working zones and access points are tied to a layout plan for the Makupa Transit Shed Container Freight Station (CFS), drawing number 2026/MTS/08/0120. The plan has been deposited with the Commissioner’s office, and it sets out where each commercial and regulatory activity at the site may take place.

Entry and exit points are marked across several areas, among them GO, G1, EE, F1 and F0. Customs warehousing sits in the CWH zone, while border control offices occupy the BCO zone. Cargo checks and handling also have dedicated space. These include a verification area, a loose cargo storage area and a section for loading and offloading.

Trade and transit cargo are catered for as well. The plan provides export holding zones, a transit cargo zone and a transshipment holding zone, alongside a section for container storage. Imported motor vehicles go to a separate zone, and the layout also marks out cargo bays numbered 1, 3 to 14, and 17 to 18.

With the re-appointment, Makupa Transit Shed Limited retains its legal standing under the East African Community Customs Management Act. The revised boundaries are expected to bring tighter oversight and a more orderly processing of transit goods moving through the port corridor.
