Bungoma County Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has said his Government will provide necessary support to revive dormant Saccos and support their growth.
He said the County Government will seek support of County Assembly members in legislating laws that will seal the loopholes in the co-operative sector used by unscrupulous people to run down Saccos.
He said: “A major catalyst in growing our economy is the Co-operative movement, but sadly it is on the verge of collapse due to poor management.”
The Governor said although there are a number of commercial activities in the county, an industrial base is non-existent.
“Co-operatives were once very strong in this county and they helped improve the livelihoods of residents especially at the grassroots. This is why we want to revive them,” Wangamati noted.
The Governor said the laws will unleash the potential within the
‘‘Co-operative movement in spurring the county’s economic growth.Trade and industry are key components in accelerating economic development, reducing poverty and enabling equitable income distribution,” he observed.
