- Busia County distributes improved chicks to youth and women groups
- Beneficiaries receive additional support to strengthen poultry projects
- County urges groups to focus on proper care and sustainable farming
Busia County has distributed 11,080 improved indigenous chicks to 135 youth and women’s groups to boost poultry farming across six areas. The County Government rolled out the first batch in partnership with Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF Suisse).
Besides the chicks, the groups received starter feed and multivitamin drugs. These will help the birds get off to a healthy start.
The beneficiaries come from Malaba South, Nambale Township, Matayos South, Busibwabo, Angurai South and Bukhayo East.
Notably, some groups asked for more than chicks. Fourteen of them requested support to build poultry houses. Another group asked for an incubator with a capacity of 250 eggs.

Director of Fisheries Hendrick Owuor spoke on behalf of Dr. George Mukok, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Smart Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Blue Economy and Agribusiness. He said the county chose to support organised groups rather than individuals.
According to Owuor, this approach makes projects more sustainable. Projects run by individuals, she noted, often collapse after some time.
Owuor urged the beneficiaries to look after the chicks until they mature. Good care, he said, will help them maximise their profits.
Finally, he assured the youth and women of Busia County of continued support from the County Government. That support, she added, will cover poultry farming and other income generating initiatives.
