The County Government of Kakamega will spend over Sh 380 million in the purchase and distribution of subsidized maize and fertilizer to farmers.
Deputy Governor Professor Philip Kutima stated that it was time the county started looking for alternative sources of income apart from the maize and cane farming.
“We have already issued out maize seedlings at a subsidized price of Sh200 from Sh500 and (DAP) fertilizer 25 kilogramme bag at Sh 750 while the 50 kilogramme bag at Sh1,500 instead of Sh1,500 and Sh3,500 respectively,” he said.
He has called on all farmers in the county to form groups and start embracing agribusiness as a way of life.
“Registered groups can easily access loans and we have a lot of loans to be given out but very few groups have registered,” he said.
He was speaking during the launch of poultry distribution to groups. Two groups from each 12 sub-counties received 400 chicks.
The deputy governor said of 15,289 registered groups 13,167 have already benefitted from the project.
He said he will be launching the second phase of One Dairy Cow Initiative in Likuyani, Butere and Shinyalu.
