Uasin Gishu County Government has promised to help Lainguse Cooperative Society get back on its feet after financial problems disrupted its milk bulking and pyrethrum farming. Officials say the same approach will extend to other cooperatives held back by a lack of funds.

County Director for Enterprise Development Kipleting Mengich made the commitment on November 5 while meeting the society’s newly constituted management team. He said the county would support cooperatives with operational and financial difficulties until they can resume normal work. Cooperatives, he added, drive economic growth, create wealth and raise household incomes, so their problems must be tackled if they are to meet their goals.

Mengich also promised to work closely with Lainguse’s new leaders. Together, he said, they would look for ways to revitalise the society and bring back the economic value it once offered members.

Lainguse’s troubles had left it unable to serve its members properly. Milk bulking and pyrethrum farming, its two main activities, were the worst affected.

Tarakwa Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Thomas Yego said the incoming officials should first win back the confidence and trust of members. Firm leadership and accountability, he said, would decide whether the society regains its stability. He also pledged his own support for the revival effort.

Society Chairperson John Sitienei thanked the county for stepping in. He said he was hopeful that the meeting would become a turning point for the cooperative’s recovery.
