Agricultural Cooperatives urged to contribute to food security

Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Phanice Khatundi has urged agricultural cooperatives across the country to unite in ensuring food security and farmer support.

The CECM who was speaking during 2025 International Day of Cooperatives (Ushirika Day) in Kitale said such alliances are critical in achieving long-term development goals.

Khatundi emphasized that cooperatives remain at the heart of building a resilient, food-secure, and economically empowered society.

She said this year’s cooperative theme “Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World.” resonates with the very foundation of what cooperatives represent.

Trans Nzoia County Director of Cooperatives Dr. Hosea Serem who hailed cooperatives as “a homegrown model of economic democracy,” crediting them with transforming rural and urban livelihoods alike.

“From savings groups to agricultural SACCOs, cooperatives are the heartbeat of grassroots economies. They offer millions access to credit, fair pricing, and resilience against economic shocks,” said Dr. Serem.

The director pointed out the importance of self-help, solidarity, and innovation, particularly among youth.

He said that the county government remains committed to working closely with the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) and other partners to champion smart climate practices, digital growth, and stronger regulatory structures

The 2025 Ushirika Day celebration also served as a moment of recognition and reward, as top-performing cooperatives from the 2024–2025 financial year were honored for their outstanding contributions and resilience.

The Cooperatives Director said the awards acknowledged excellence across various categories, including innovation, financial management, community impact, and sustainability.
