A new team has officially taken over the leadership of Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN) following elections held on November 25 at the lakeside city.

The team dubbed ‘Team Fresh’, led by veteran journalist Dickens Wasonga as the new Chairman, has managed to bag all the positions from Chairperson to Organizing Secretary.

In a hotly contested poll held at Kisumu’s Public Service Club, Dickens Wasonga resoundingly defeated the immediate former Chairman Rushdie Oudia, garnering 47 votes against Oudia’s 20 votes.

Doreen Magak and Daniel Dembede were earlier elected unopposed as the Vice Chairperson and Deputy Secretary respectively.

Harold Odhiambo has been elected as the Secretary of the Network after defeating Maurice Alal with 46 to 19 votes.

The new Treasurer is Sheila Mbone who garnered 41 votes against immediate former occupant Wickliffe Odera who got 21 votes.

The Organizing Secretary position went to Victor Raballa who garnered 43 votes and defeated Kepher Otieno who managed to get 19 votes.

The elections were presided over by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection officials from Kisumu Central Sub-County while Media Council of Kenya through its Western Kenya Regional Coordinator Teddy Oundo witnessed the polls.

The new Chairperson promised to work with all the Journalists, adding that unity is vital to the success of the Network.

Oudia thanked the Kisumu Media Team for ensuring a peaceful election that has ushered in new officials to steer the network for three years.

KJN was registered in 2012 as Kisumu Journalists Self Help Group with its pioneer Chairman Dickson Odhiambo serving for a period of six years from 2013 to 2018.

In September 2018, a new leadership was ushered in where Oudia took over as the second Chairperson and served until November 25, 2023.
