Cooperative societies raised a total of 13 million to the Co-operative Coronavirus Response Committee (CCRC) to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The committee was constituted by the Department of Co-operatives to cushion vulnerable members in the co-operatives sector who were heavily affected by the pandemic.

Speaking to Sacco Review, Commissioner for Co-operatives Mr. Geoffrey Njang’ombe said the committee helped many members.

“We targeted vulnerable members of various co-operative societies mainly in slum areas of Nairobi,”   said Njang’ombe.

The Committee managed to reach out to 10,000 members in Saccos and co-operative societies mainly in the hospitality industry.

Those affected in the horticulture industry due to the lock down that was imposed by the government early last year were also assisted by the committee.

The money was disbursed through the respective co-operative societies to vulnerable members mostly in Nairobi’s Kibra slums and Naivasha flower farms.

The Kenya Police Sacco donated Sh3 million to the kitty, followed by Unaitas and Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives (KUSCO) Sh1 million each and Kimisitu Sacco Sh300, 000 among others.
