Garissa county Cooperative Chief Samuel Karanja has lamented over the fact that none of the 79 Saccos in the county is headed by a woman.
He blamed male chauvinism in the region, adding that the residents don’t vouch for women leadership despite ladies having proven to be eloquent in leadership in many other areas.
Karanja said plans were on high gear to have a maiden FOSA office in the county.
“Such an office will serve members well,” he said, further urging residents to embrace the cooperative spirit which has the potential to push the county to the next level of economic development.
The county director explained that due to the residents’ entrepreneurship skills, the Sacco movement has the great potential in the area.
He added that the region has huge resources of whitewash and gum Arabica and that with the establishment of well-run Saccos, the region can grow into an economic powerhouse.
Karanja lamented that poor infrastructure and limited cooperative staff in the vast Garissa county hasn’t augured well for the cooperative movement.
