Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Mutahi Kagwe has officially inaugurated the new board of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), calling for accelerated adoption of digital agricultural technologies to transform the sector.
Speaking during the event, CS Kagwe commended KALRO’s critical role as the region’s leading agricultural research institution. With 16 research institutes and 64 centers across the country, KALRO is the largest national agricultural research body in East, Central, and Southern Africa, focusing on a wide range of value chains that support Kenya’s food systems.
The CS lauded the organization’s contributions to developing drought-tolerant crops and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices, which he described as key pillars in enhancing national food security and driving economic growth.
“Agriculture remains a central pillar of the government’s development agenda,” said CS Kagwe. “We must transform KALRO from a national leader to a continental powerhouse in agricultural research and innovation.”

To achieve this vision, the CS emphasized the need to attract top talent, offer career growth opportunities, and embed digital technologies at the heart of KALRO’s operations — a mission he pledged to support through increased funding, stronger partnerships, and supportive policy frameworks.
During the ceremony, CS Kagwe also paid tribute to outgoing Director General Dr. Eliud Kireger for his 11 years of transformative leadership.
He welcomed the incoming team, led by Board Chair Dr. Thuo Mathenge Wa-Nguku, urging them to drive a bold and inclusive transformation of the agricultural sector.
“I challenge the new leadership to build a resilient and modern agriculture sector that benefits every Kenyan household,” he said.
The inauguration signals a renewed push by the government to leverage research, innovation, and digital solutions in revitalizing the country’s agricultural landscape.
