CS Oparanya promises more support to Cooperative University

The Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Wycliffe Oparanya has said the government will allocate more resources to support to the Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) in executing its role in the growth of co-operative movement in Kenya.

Oparanya who met the University’s top management led by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kamau Ngamau at his NSSF office appreciated the role the university plays to foster training and research in the co-operatives sector.

The CS and management discussions were also centered on key projects to leverage on the cooperative advantage to drive Bottom-up growth in Agricultural/ Manufacturing and Service sector.

CUK is a leading center for quality co-operative education, training, research, and consultancy in Kenya. It is behind enhancement of professionalism within the cooperative movement.

CUK was granted a charter in the year 2016; it is the first of its kind in the country.

The CS observed that there are many challenges affecting the cooperative sector that needs a lot of attention especially on governance issues.

“Cooperative movement in Kenya dates back to 1930’s and has picked up and we cannot allow mismanagement to slow down the progress made for several years,” the CS said.

Oparanya further stated that the government will tighten policy and supervision of Cooperatives and every Sacco must be supervised.

“Members contributions in Saccos must also be protected, the Cooperatives Bill 2024 will address main challenges affecting the sector,” he noted.

Prof  Ngamau tabled a comprehensive progress report before the CS on the planned Joint Co-operative Conference, which is scheduled between November 4-8, 2024 in Mombasa themed: Digital Africa Rising. The Cabinet Secretary promised to support the upcoming conference which seeks to promote the adoption and use of technology in cooperatives.
