Dairy cooperatives in Kiambu County dominated the awards in this year’s International Day of Cooperatives, Kiambu chapter, held at Karuri Primary School grounds in Kiambaa Sub-county.
Githunguri Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society, the third largest milk processor in the country, emerged the winner in large society’s category and was awarded as the best in value addition/innovation with diverse product range.
Limuru Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society was ranked top in percentage rate payment in the same category.
Kiambaa Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society, paying farmers at Ksh47 per litre, was ranked best in milk payment, as Kabete Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society took home the best in compliance trophy.
In the medium category, Ndumberi Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society was ranked the best in percentage rate payment while Gatamaiyu Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society was the best managed.
Kikuyu Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society paid farmers the highest amount for their milk at Ksh44.07 in this category, with Muguga Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society being the best in compliance.
In the small category, Sigona Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society was highest in percentage rate payment, with Gikambura Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society being the best in payment at Ksh41 per litre.
According to Patrick Githendu, the Ushirika Day chairman, over 200 societies participated with 80 of them being awarded in various categories despite the Covid-19 ravages.
“Saccos which do not rely on check-off systems were hard hit during Covid-19 pandemic, but now they have gradually come up,” Githendu said.
