DPP orders DCI probe into Eastleigh building collapse

Rubbles of the Eastleigh building that collapsed
  • DPP orders detectives to investigate the Eastleigh building collapse and establish what went wrong.
  • Investigators to examine possible lapses involving developers, contractors and county officials.
  • ODPP warns that anyone found criminally responsible will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered detectives to investigate the collapse of a multi-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, an incident reported to have left people injured, property destroyed and others missing.

In a statement dated October 26, 2026, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said it had directed the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to carry out thorough investigations. The instruction was issued under Article 157(4) of the Constitution, and the office cited the gravity of the incident and the need to establish what happened.

The ODPP also moved to clarify the paperwork. It said that, as of the date of the statement, the Nairobi City County Government had never sent it an inquiry file on the building’s construction. No file had come to the office on possible wrongdoing by the private developer, professionals or county officials either.

The probe will examine what led to the collapse. Detectives will look into whether any act or omission by Nairobi City County Government officials, the developer, contractors or other professionals contributed to it. Their inquiry will cover every stage of the project, from planning and approval to supervision and construction.

Once the investigations end, the DCI will pass the inquiry file to the ODPP, which will review it independently and give directions in line with the Constitution and the law. If the evidence shows criminal culpability, the office said it will prosecute those found responsible, regardless of their position or status.

The DPP also extended his sympathies to those injured and to everyone who lost property. He warned developers, contractors, construction professionals and relevant public officials against ignoring building regulations, safety standards and statutory approval requirements, adding that any conduct amounting to a criminal offence will be dealt with according to the law.
