Tana River farmers receive grain silos, solar pumps

  • Tana River County distributes farm equipment to boost food production and reduce post-harvest losses.
  • Farmer groups and cooperatives receive new support to improve grain storage and irrigation.
  • The county steps up investment in agriculture to strengthen livelihoods and food security.

More than 6,000 farmers in Tana River County now have better tools to store their harvests and water their crops, after the county government distributed grain storage equipment and irrigation pumps across four wards.

The consignment includes 6,000 hermetic bags, 250 grain silos, 250 tarpaulins and a number of moisture meters. For irrigation, the county also supplied 60 solar powered pumps and two diesel pumps. Together, the items are meant to help farmers grow more, lose less after harvest and keep their families fed.

Vetted farmer groups and cooperatives received the equipment, which means it will be shared among members instead of going to individual growers. Funding came from the Tana River County Ward Development Fund, a pool of money set aside for projects chosen at ward level.

The purchases were made under Governor Dr. Dhadho Godhana, whose administration says it is putting people at the centre of development. In that vein, better storage and wider irrigation are expected to protect farmers’ incomes and strengthen livelihoods across the county.

Agriculture and Cooperative Development Chief Officer Faith Buya said the county will keep investing in farming and in priorities set by each ward. Her aim, she explained, is to empower farming communities and build a county that produces more, withstands shocks and can feed itself.
