FAO, ICLEI to hold urban food systems workshop in Nairobi

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) are set to host an all-day workshop in Nairobi focused on designing nutrition-sensitive investment strategies for wholesale food markets.

Kicking off on Wednesday, June 10, at 8:00 a.m. at the Argyle Grand Hotel, the event will gather city and county officials from Nairobi, Kisumu, Kampala, Lilongwe, and Lusaka. National ministry representatives, market managers, development partners, and technical experts will also attend.

The workshop will introduce a new step-by-step guide designed to help stakeholders implement these investment strategies. The initiative is part of FAO’s project, “Improving availability of healthy diets through innovative market-based approaches to nutrition,” which strengthens food systems by driving market-based solutions for safe, affordable, and nutritious food.

Key discussions will centre on transforming wholesale markets into strategic entry points for healthier urban diets. Participants will explore investment approaches that look beyond basic infrastructure and efficiency, focusing instead on long-term sustainability.

Additionally, the workshop aims to equip city authorities and market managers with the tools needed to integrate nutrition-focused planning into the financing, management, and monitoring of local wholesale markets.
