Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communication & Digital Economy Eliud Owalo has announced that the government will construct dykes along River Nyando to control flooding caused by the ongoing heavy rains.
Speaking during a relief food distribution drive at Nyamasawo Primary School in Ombaka, Nyando sub-county, Owalo disclosed the government will implement the construction as a short-term measure to protect families living near the river.
He noted that the completion of the Koru-Soin multi-purpose dam on the border of Kisumu and Kericho will suffice as a long-term solution which will also generate electricity and supply water for irrigation to boost food security.
Owalo disclosed that the National Youth Service (NYS) successfully de-silted the river as part of an initiative to tackle floods before the onset of El Nino rains.
The CS further said that plans were underway to implement the Nyanza Region Economic Development Blueprint which covers infrastructure development, water, agriculture and food security.
