Consumers have been urged against panic buying amid concerns over a milk shortage in the country.
Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) Chairperson Genesio Mugo said the shortage was minimal and should not cause alarm among consumers, putting the shortfall at around 3 per cent of normal supply. As the sector’s regulator, he said the Board wanted to reassure the public that the gap was small and did not warrant concern.

Mugo attributed some of the stock-outs on shelves to panic buying, saying consumers had been purchasing more milk than they normally required out of fear that supplies would run out. He reiterated that the shortage was not significant, and therefore there was no cause for alarm and no need for panic buying.
Mugo urged consumers to buy only what they need, assuring them that milk supplies would continue. He also warned consumers against buying unpasteurised milk sold by hawkers, saying it could contain substances that are unhealthy for consumers.
