President William Ruto has said government is committed in reviving the sugar sector and in two years or maximum three years Kenya will be exporting sugar.
Speaking on Monday during ODM-Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group Meeting, in Karen, the president said the country has made a major step in the sugar, tea and coffee industry.
“Watch this space in just two or maximum 3 years Kenya will be an exporter of sugar,” he said. The head of state said it is through broad-based government that the issue of sugar got fixed.
“We have been looking for safeguards. Using public money because we could not bite the bullet and tell the crooks to get out, we are going to change the sugar sector,” he said.
The president said the government had reduced the import of sugar and maize by 70 % and also will also transform the coffee sector.

This follows after government leased the four state-owned sugar factories (Nzoia, Sony, Chemilil, and Muhoroni) revitalize their operations.
It had agreed on a number of issues facing the sector that include prompt payments, better working conditions for workers, and transparent handling of forward sales.
The government had also reaffirmed our commitment to revitalizing the sugar sector and ensuring that both farmers and factory workers are adequately compensated.
The ministry of agriculture had emphasized on the importance of collaboration between the lessees and government oversight teams to ensure seamless transition and efficient management of the sector.
