“Let’s spread the word and ensure Kisumu shines as a beacon of tourism, culture, and peace,” he added.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife invited 47 county governments to submit bids and Kisumu emerged victorious.

The event celebrated the continent’s uniqueness and identity while promoting intra-Africa trade.

Kisumu will take centre stage as it showcases its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes and tourist attractions.

United Nations World Tourism Day is commemorated every 27th day of September each year since 1980 with a purpose of fostering awareness among international community on the importance of tourism on its social, cultural, political and economic value.

The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the Organization in 1970, paving the way for the establishment of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) five years later.

The yearly celebration seeks to address global challenges outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry makes in reaching the sustainable development goals.

UNWTO has identified investments as one of the key priorities for tourism’s recovery and future growth and development.
