The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has disbursed Sh12.1 million in compensation to 44 families in Gituagi Village, Nyeri County, whose homes and crops were destroyed when the Gura Hydro Canal collapsed during the recent long‑rain season.
Speaking during the compensation announcement, Gura Hydro Power Project Chairman Wambugu Mukundi said the community had embraced the package and welcomed KTDA’s additional commitments aimed at addressing long‑term concerns. He revealed that the agency plans to roll out development projects in the area, including the construction of a library, the rehabilitation of roads adjacent to the canal, and the enhancement of irrigation infrastructure to boost food production and increase farmers’ incomes.
Community Chairman Moses Wanjau Mwai welcomed the agreement, noting that residents had also secured guarantees to improve safety around the hydroelectric facility. He said CCTV cameras would be installed and sections of the canal fenced off to enhance surveillance and reduce the risk of accidents.

The announcement was attended by senior KTDA officials, among them Acting Group CEO Eng. Francis Miano, Zone 4 Board Member David Ndung’u, KTDA Power Company Acting General Manager Eng. Moses Shikuku and Majani Insurance General Manager Pauline Mwangi.
The compensation follows comprehensive assessments of the destruction caused when sections of the canal collapsed after heavy rains, triggering floods that damaged homes, wiped out crops, and disrupted the livelihoods of families dependent on farming.
KTDA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting tea farmers and communities surrounding its operations, while pledging to uphold its responsibility to ensure the safety and well‑being of residents living near its infrastructure.
