More than 250 traders left counting losses after a fierce fire razed the Machakos Mitumba Market on Friday now have a fresh start, after the county government handed each of them Ksh50,000 to help rebuild their businesses.
The traders also received education bursary cheques for their children in various schools and colleges, as Governor Wavinya Ndeti moved to cushion them from the disaster.
Speaking during the cheque issuance at the market, Governor Ndeti announced that reconstruction of the market will begin immediately, with each affected trader guaranteed space on the same site.
“We are constructing modern shades with fire extinguishers and a modern water point,” she said.
She added that the new stalls will feature raised metallic roofs, cabro flooring and pavements, and pathways measuring three meters wide to allow for easy movement.

A solar lighting system will also be installed to modernize the market and enhance security. Stands will additionally be constructed for traders to display their clothes.
Governor Ndeti lamented that some politicians were inciting residents instead of helping traders recover from the tragedy. She emphasized that markets fall under the county government and urged Machakos Town MP Caleb Mule to keep off the matter.

The Governor was accompanied by County Executive Committee (CEC) Members Anastacia Munyaka (Trade), Dr. Consolata Mutisya (Education), Ritah Ndunge (Youth, Sports and Gender) and Nathaniel Nganga (Lands).
