- Construction of the Ksh1.2 billion Machakos University Student Village hostel has resumed after delays caused by difficult ground conditions, with the contractor implementing a recovery plan.
- The project will deliver three hostel blocks accommodating about 2,520 students, alongside access roads, power infrastructure and a student mini mart.
- The contractor will run simultaneous construction, extended working hours and night shifts to meet the revised target of reaching the ground slab level by October 2026.
Construction of the Ksh1.2 billion Machakos University Student Village hostel is set to resume in full after the contractor returned to site with a recovery plan aimed at overcoming delays caused by challenging ground conditions.
The project comprises three hostel blocks with a combined accommodation capacity of approximately 2,520 students. It also includes supporting infrastructure such as access roads, power reticulation and a student mini mart.
Site engineer Monica Juma said the project experienced a slow start due to the site’s sloping terrain and unexpected rock formations, which required additional excavation works during the foundation stage.
To recover lost time, the contractor plans to undertake simultaneous construction on all three hostel blocks, extend working hours beyond the normal schedule and introduce night shifts once foundation works are completed. The recovery programme targets reaching the ground slab level by October 2026.

During an inspection visit by the County Development Committee, Machakos County Commissioner Jackson Ole Chuta urged the contractor to maintain the recovery plan and ensure the project is completed within the agreed timelines.
“This is an important investment for our students and the general community. We expect all stakeholders to remain committed to delivering the project on time, while maintaining quality and accountability,” he said.
Once completed, the Ksh1.2 billion student village hostel is expected to significantly reduce the accommodation shortage at Machakos University by providing housing for about 2,520 students.
The project is also expected to enhance students’ welfare, improve the learning environment and support the university’s growing enrolment.
