  • Nyeri County plans to establish a countywide SACCO for boda boda riders through a phased rollout from ward to county level.
  • The SACCO aims to expand access to affordable financial services, promote savings, and support the growth of riders’ businesses.

Nyeri County plans to establish a county-level Savings and Credit Co-operative Organisation (SACCO) for boda boda riders, following a meeting between county leadership and representatives of rider self-help groups.

The meeting was held at the county offices and brought together sub-county representatives of boda boda rider self-help groups, led by Chairperson Charles Ndegwa. Also present were Trade, Tourism and Cooperatives County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Dr Lucy Kiogora and Cooperatives Officer Francis Wanyiri.

The proposed SACCO will be built up in stages. It will start at ward level, then grow to sub-county level, before eventually becoming a county-wide institution. County officials say this structure will ensure boda boda riders from every part of Nyeri are represented and have an equal chance to benefit.

Officials added that they will continue working with the Directorate of Cooperatives to support programmes that empower residents and stimulate economic growth across Nyeri.
