George Ombado has been re-elected Executive Director of the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), securing a second three-year term at the helm of the continental Sacco body.
The Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) confirmed the development, congratulating Ombado on what it called a well-deserved achievement for Africa’s cooperative movement. CAK is the national apex organisation for Kenya’s cooperative sector, representing thousands of Saccos and cooperative societies across the country.
A proven leader in cooperative finance
Ombado has led ACCOSCA since taking up the role, guiding the organisation’s work to expand financial inclusion for savings and credit cooperatives across the continent. His re-election reflects sustained backing from member associations for his approach to cooperative development.

He is a Kenyan development economist by training. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Hons) from Daystar University. Ombado also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, a Master’s Degree in Economics of Development from Erasmus University in the Netherlands, and a Master of Science in management from Strathclyde Business School in the United Kingdom. He also serves on the boards of the Africa Co-operative Development Foundation and the CADASTA Foundation, and has previously sat on the board of the World Council of Credit Unions.
What this means for the sector
ACCOSCA is a pan African confederation of national Sacco associations, established in Kenya in 1968 to promote the cooperative business model as a tool for economic growth. It works with governments, regulators, and cooperative unions to strengthen financial cooperatives and widen access to savings and credit services, particularly for underserved communities.
Under Ombado’s leadership, ACCOSCA has pushed for stronger cooperative legislation across Africa and has highlighted the sector’s untapped potential. He has previously noted that despite the continent’s large population, cooperative membership remains relatively low, which he sees as an opportunity for growth rather than a limitation.
CAK said his continued leadership would help ACCOSCA build on recent momentum and deepen its impact on financial inclusion across Africa. The alliance wished him continued success as he begins his new term.
