Agriculture Principal Secretary, PS Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh Paul has highlighted Kenya’s strategic engagement in nuclear science for the Agrifood transformation.
PS Ronoh was speaking when he participated in the high-level thematic event “Enhancing Health and Food Security in Africa through Nuclear Science and Technology” during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) held in Yokohama.
In his remarks, he emphasized Kenya’s strategic engagement in the Atoms for Food Initiative, a collaboration between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as a transformative pathway to strengthen agricultural resilience, food safety, and public health.
The PS highlighted how nuclear science is being harnessed to combat trans-boundary animal diseases, reduce antimicrobial resistance, and improve crop productivity, particularly in drought prone regions.
He noted that Kenya is leveraging advanced nuclear derived techniques such as mutation breeding, isotopic diagnostics, and irradiated vaccines to enhance early disease detection, optimize soil and water use, and promote climate-smart agriculture.

The innovations are aligned with the One Health approach and are being scaled through partnerships with institutions like KALRO, Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute – KEVEVAPI, and Central Veterinary Laboratories.
The PS further underscored the importance of South–South and Triangular Cooperation, as well as public–private partnerships, in accelerating agrifood transformation.
Affirming Kenya’s commitment to deploying science driven solutions to achieve key SDGs particularly those related to poverty reduction, zero hunger, climate action, and equity.
His participation in the high-level thematic event reaffirmed Kenya’s position as a regional leader in integrating nuclear science into agriculture and food systems, driving inclusive growth and sustainable development across the continent.
