President William Ruto has unveiled a government funded artisan certification programme aimed at enabling skilled workers to obtain formal qualifications and secure employment opportunities under the Affordable Housing Programme.
Speaking on Thursday, July 23, 2026, during a meeting with artisans from Nairobi at State House, the President said the government had set aside funds to facilitate the certification of experienced workers with practical skills but no formal qualifications.
“We have a government programme and the funding is already available. If you are a skilled worker who already has the practical skills but does not have a certificate, we are ready to support you,” said the Head of State.
Ruto said the initiative will enable artisans to register through a government system, with the government covering the cost of obtaining certification.
“We have already been connected to the government system so that you can register, and the government will cover the cost of obtaining your certificate,” he said.
The Head of State urged skilled workers to take advantage of the programme, saying certification would open up more employment opportunities and enable artisans to contribute to national development projects.
He noted that artisans will play a key role in implementing the Affordable Housing Programme(AHP), one of the flagship initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The government says the artisan certification programme is intended to bridge the gap between practical skills and formal qualifications, enabling workers in the informal sector to compete more effectively for jobs in construction and other technical fields.
