The Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) has received a Ksh 70 million cheque under the World Bank–supported De-Risking Inclusion and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies (DRIVE) Project, a strategic initiative designed to transform livestock-based enterprises and strengthen pastoralist livelihoods across the county.

The cheque handover was facilitated through the Kenya Development Corporation (KDC). It represents a targeted effort to unlock affordable credit and promote sustainable investment in livestock farming — a sector that forms the backbone of the county’s economic and social life.

Its primary objective is to shield pastoralist communities from the adverse effects of climate shocks such as drought by reinforcing livestock value chains, introducing Index-Based Livestock Insurance, and expanding access to financial services through digital platforms.

The handover ceremony was graced by Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, Principal Secretary for Investment and Promotion, who lauded the initiative as a timely intervention for pastoralist communities. He was joined by Joel Arumonyang, Principal Secretary for Public Works; Norah Buyaki Ratemo, Chief Executive Officer of KDC; and Phillip Kemei, Chairman of Eco Pillar Sacco.

County officials emphasized that strengthening cooperatives remains central to the development agenda. “Cooperatives act as engines of economic growth, aggregating smallholder efforts into scalable, bankable enterprises. They play a critical role in democratizing finance, widening access to economic opportunities, and ensuring that resources are reinvested within local communities.”
