Kajiado County Co-operative Commissioner Jane Karanja has urged co-operative societies to open branches in remote areas to reach out for more members.
Karanja who was speaking during opening of Ollin Sacco new branch in Kiserian said areas such as Shompole, Nguruman in Magadi’s Kajiado West Constituency remain untapped.
She said more locals in the rural areas need to be educated on the importance of joining Saccos and the County Government is supporting Saccos to open branches in remote areas and ensure that more people join the Saccos.
She commended Ollin Sacco for opening its second branch in Kajiado County. It also has a branch in Kitengela that opened in 2015.
The Sacco CEO John Gathige said the area is conducive for business adding that he will support business people by giving out cheap loans
He said more branches will be opened in the future to cater for the growing population.
Most residents in rural Maasai land who are livestock keepers have little knowledge on savings; most of them have many livestock which end up dying during droughts.
