The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (Sasra), in collaboration with the Universal Traders Sacco (UTS) and Netfund, yesterday planted 3000 indiginous trees in Iveti Forest in Machakos County.
Sasra Chief Executive Officer Peter Njuguna and UTS CEO Dominic Mutunga led a joint team comprising Sacco members to plant trees at a site in the forest under the guidance of Kenya Forest Services officers.
Speaking to the press at the site, Njuguna said they had collaborated with Netfund to buy tree seedlings from farmers since KFS had exhausted its stock of seedlings in the recent past.
He said the authority was responding to President William Ruto’s call to plant 15 billion trees and achieve 30 percent tree cover by the year 2032 for sustainable livelihoods and to combat climate change.
“We had to buy tree seedlings from individual farmers because KFS has exhausted their stock of the varieties we wanted following the national tree planting exercise, “said Mr. Njuguna.
UTS CEO Mutunga said the organization was working with farmers to advance them loans to put up seedbeds and grow seedlings for green, eco-friendly businesses.
He observed that rain patterns had become erratic in the Ukambani region due to depletion of the environment, hence the need to restore the water catchment area for the benefit of farmers who continued to experience increased crop failure.
He added that the exercise was one way of giving back to the society that had been transacting business with UTS.
