Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has challenged teachers to apply for county tenders so as to increase their revenue base.
Speaking during the Newfortis Sacco (formerly Nyeri Teachers Sacco) Annual General Meeting (AGM), Kahiga asked teachers to start other income generating ventures instead of relying on their salaries alone.
He also urged lending institutions use Local Purchase Orders (LPO) as security for borrowing money.
“A County LPO should be sufficient collateral to get a loan in terms of the tenders we offer in the county,” he said.
He said doing that will enable teachers to borrow, start income generating activities and increase their revenue streams.
The governor also advised teachers to avoid being so cautious on borrowing and instead borrow more.
“My plea to you is that you should borrow as much as you can, pay promptly and keep moving. This cautiousness will not help you own anything,” he said.
He also appealed to lending institutions to consider creating a new product where members can use LPOs from the county government and be able to get loans.
“My government pays debts and you can therefore lend any member who qualifies and gets a tender on the strength of the LPO because we shall surely pay,” he said.
