Bungoma County Chief Officer for Cooperatives Development Beatrice Nakhumicha has urged the county government to sensitize cooperative society leaders on leadership and management.
Speaking during the International Cooperative Day celebrations held at Mt Elgon Coffee Mills, Nakhumicha attributed the collapse of cooperative societies in the region to management wrangles and argued that training the leaders on management will help solve the challenge.
She urged cooperatives to follow the guidelines in the Cooperative Society Act and to choose leaders who uphold integrity at all times.
Nakhumicha affirmed that Bungoma county governor Kenneth Lusaka has plans to support coffee farmers market and sell their products directly to the consumers.
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce (KNCC) Bungoma Chairman John Max Wafula called on the residents to join the cooperative societies to qualify for loans with low interests.
He further urged the government to provide subsidy fertilizers to coffee farmers to boost production.
New Chesikaki Cooperative Society Vice Chairman Simon Masinde called on deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to crush cartels in the tea and coffee sectors as promised.
Masinde slammed Bungoma County government for failing to support cooperative societies in the county, further arguing that with cooperative societies being devolved, the county government should be on the forefront fighting for them.
“The county government through CECM Agriculture Monicah Fedha should identify an office at Kilimo house in Bungoma for the various cooperative representatives to work from and enhance working partnership with the county government,” he stated.
Bungoma Woman representa Catherine Wambilianga urged the national government to fight cartels and ensure coffee farmers sell their products at the right price.
