United States President Donald Trump has signed legislation extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to December 31, 2028.

Kenya’s AGOA-accredited enterprises employed 82,026 people in 2025, up from 66,804 in 2024, a 22.8 per cent increase.

The apparel industry alone supports more than 66,000 direct jobs linked to Kenya’s preferential access to the American market.

There is currently no authoritative official figure that allows Kenya to say exactly how many additional indirect jobs the 2028 extension will create.

The government has identified value-added agricultural products, leather and leather goods, pharmaceuticals and manufactured products as areas with potential for expansion.
