286,000 locally assembled phones sold since October 2023, says CS Owalo

Some 268, 000 government-backed locally assembled smartphones have been sold to Kenyans since the first consignment was unveiled to the market end of October last year.

The figure translate to 80 per cent of the 330, 000 phones assembled.

Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo speaking at Aga Khan University’s Digital Transformation Conference said this illustrates the potential market for locally assembled phones in the country.

“As we speak, we have managed to churn out through this facility a total of 330,000 devices, out of which 268,000 already have been consumed. This means there is unlimited demand for these smart devices,” said the CS.

President William Ruto launched the first-ever mobile phone assembly plant in the country known as East Africa Device Assembly Limited in Athi River.

The programme is a joint venture involving Safaricom, Jamii Telcom, Chinese phone manufacturers Telel and Industrial Technology Training Company Limited.

Some of the devices include 4-GB enabled Neon 5 Smarta and Neon 6 Ultra retailing at KSh7,499 and KSh8,999.
