President William Ruto has appointed Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary, Simon Chelugui to the new Cooperatives docket in the same capacity.
Chelugui is the only Cabinet Secretary serving under the Uhuru Kenyatta regime to be retained and will spearhead Co-operatives and Micro Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development.
Cooperative players expressed optimism on the appointment of a substantive CS for the position to streamline activities in the vibrant sector.
The players argue that the cooperative sector is critical as it enables the country’s socio-economic development hence the need for a full Cabinet Secretary to enhance the decision making process.
During the tenure of Uhuru Kenyatta, Peter Munya served as the Agriculture, Trade and Cooperative Cabinet Secretary.
The new CS will have to be vetted by Parliament before being sworn into office. Before he served as the Labour and Social Protection CS, Chelugui served as the Water and Irrigation CS.
Some of the developments the new CS is expected to fast-track include the Central Liquidity Facility, the Deposit Guarantee Fund and the National Cooperative Policy.
