Machakos Farmers Co-ops receive grant after locust invasion

Four farmers’ co-operative societies in Machakos have a reason to smile after the County government through the Emergency Locusts Response Fund (ELRF) gave them a grant meant to improve marketing of their farm produce in a bid to compensate them after the recent locust invasion.

The societies each received a grant of Ksh500, 000 through the ELRF, which is a programme meant to compensate farmers in the County who were affected by locust invasion during the years 2019 and 2020.

The four societies that benefited are Kayatta Irrigation Rural Co-operative Society in Matungulu North Ward, Masinga Horticultural Farmers’ Cooperative Society, Mbiuni Livestock Co-operative Society and Kalau Farmers Savings and Credit Co-operative Society in Mbiuni Ward.

Speaking recently while at Mwala Sub-county, Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized on the need to have food security in the county, encouraging farmers to join co-operatives in order to have a collective marketing of their produce and eliminate middlemen.

The initiative between the county government and the Emergency Locust Response Program is targeting farmers in Matungulu North, Mbiuni, Kivaa and Masinga Central wards.

The package includes; Galla goats, improved indigenous chicks, chick mash, hermatic bags, banana tissue culture seedlings, certified seeds (beans and cowpeas), foliar feed, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizer, beehives and eartags among other products.

Governor Ndeti said the rapidly-growing global population provided the need to develop innovative ways of increasing food production to meet the spiraling demand and called on the youth to embrace Agriculture as the next frontier for big business.
