Meru Senator pledges support for Boda Boda sector, encourages riders to join SACCOs

Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has reaffirmed his commitment to empowering and protecting boda boda operators in Meru County.

The Senator spoke during a meeting with leaders from the boda boda sector at his office, where he emphasized the critical role the industry plays in the country’s economy.

“Boda boda business employs over two million young people in Kenya, and this sector must be respected and supported,” Senator Murungi said.

The meeting discussed key challenges facing the sector, including insecurity, licensing hurdles, motorbike theft, and limited access to affordable insurance.

The Senator also highlighted the importance of encouraging boda boda riders to join Sacco savings schemes for financial security and empowerment.

Senator Murungi who is also the Senate deputy speaker pledged to champion policies that support boda boda operators, recognizing their vital contribution to transportation, employment, and the local economy.

“By supporting this sector, the government aims to enhance the livelihoods of boda boda riders and their families, ultimately boosting the local economy. We must support the empowerment program for these people to benefit” he said.
