The government has intensified efforts to revive Kenya’s coffee industry by extending sensitization meetings to Narok, Bomet, Kericho and Nandi Counties.

The meetings are part of the ongoing Revival of Coffee through the Co-operative Societies Programme, led by New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (New KPCU) and the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development.

This nationwide initiative aims to restore the sector’s former productivity and global competitiveness. The focus this week is on deepening awareness and farmer participation in the four counties.

It is reported that the programme targets to raise Kenya’s coffee production from 51,852 metric tons to 151,000 metric tons by the 2028/2029 financial year. It also seeks to increase productivity from 2 kilograms per tree to 6 kilograms.

Sensitization meetings are scheduled for August 7, 2025, at Kilgoris DEB in Narok County at 9:00 AM and Bomet IAAF Stadium in Bomet County at 1:00 PM.

On August 8, 2025, sessions will be held at Sirigoi Primary School in Kericho County at 9:00 AM and Kapsaos Primary School in Nandi County at 1:00 PM.

These meetings will include farmer training sessions, policy discussions and practical demonstrations on modern coffee farming techniques. The goal is to empower cooperative societies to drive coffee production growth.

The programme is anchored on seven key objectives. These include expanding acreage under coffee and rehabilitating abandoned farms.

It also focuses on modernizing processing infrastructure and digitizing cooperative operations for better efficiency, strengthening research, training and extension services for climate-smart coffee production is another priority area and improving governance in cooperatives to enhance transparency and accountability is also part of the agenda.

Additionally, the programme seeks to enhance value addition, branding and access to domestic and international markets.

Inclusivity is a core focus, with deliberate efforts to involve youth, women and persons with disabilities in the coffee value chain.

Boosting domestic coffee consumption through policy support, branding and public sector engagement is also a key objective.

Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, Dr. Wycliffe Oparanya, will today preside over the sensitization meetings, where he will interact with farmers on the ground to reinforce the government’s commitment to reviving the coffee sector through structured cooperative movements.
