The Kajiado County Assembly Committee on Agriculture has kicked off an oversight tour of livestock sale yards and slaughterhouses within the county.
The committee led by Chairperson Joseph Mutunkei (MCA, Ildamat ward) inspected Kiserian Livestock Market and Slaughter Yard in Kajiado West.
The visit focuses on sanitation, infrastructure, revenue collection, animal welfare, and regulatory compliance. While noting progress, they also highlighted existing challenges, stressing the need for high standards to safeguard public health and strengthen the livestock sector.
The committee also visited Ilbissil and Mashuuru Livestock Sale Yards to assess management, infrastructure, and compliance.

In Ilbissil Sale Yard they found to be well-managed, though concerns were raised about sick livestock from Tanzania.
The yard’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, including student scholarships, were commended by the committee.
The Mashuuru Sale Yard Lacks clear land demarcation, making it prone to encroachment, and has water shortages.
The Committee recommended urgent land demarcation, provision of water, and establishment of a formal management committee.
For both yards, the Committee emphasized the need for permanent business stalls to improve hygiene and modernize livestock trading.
